Title: My Everyday Plastic

Medium: wood, wire, clothespins, eye hooks, snack food packaging, plastic bags

Dimensions: 38” x 60” x 10”

Year: 2018

This piece is the beginning of my experience on the topic of global inequality.

I have a vivid memory of a trip to one of the highest hills of my city where the view overlooking  the city is fantastic. However, on the other side of the viewpoint is a landfill where local people are collecting trash. Those people live in very poor conditions where they recycle as much as they can. Most of those snack bags are from industrial and developed countries. They ship their products to sell all around the world, and their final destination after consuming them is waste in landfills.

In this case the snack bags are collected, and used multiple times, showing that something that seems insignificant is actually a resource. Reflecting on this practice, we need to invest more effort to be more efficient with our environment. This piece is also a tribute to the workers who gather trash from the León landfill. They have inspired me to recycle with more enthusiasm.
